Our Heritage
In 1892 Frank M. Jung established this funeral home. It was known as Jung Undertaking and was located on Jefferson’s Main Street, where the Urban Restaurant is currently located.
In 1930 Gordon Matters, who had been employed by Jung, purchased the business.
Jung Undertaking later became known as the Matters Funeral Home.
In 1940 Gordon Matters purchased the Kerschensteiner home at 402 South Center Avenue in Jefferson, and put an addition on the home.
In 1968 the funeral home was purchased by Tom Curry, who had been employed by Matters. It then became known as the Curry Funeral Home.
In 1977 Curry Funeral Home built a new facility and relocated from 402 S. Center Ave. to the present location at 900 West Racine Street in Jefferson.
In January 1991, Curry Funeral Home was purchased by Marla (Wieting) Schneider and her former spouse, changing the name to Schneider Funeral Home.
Marla’s history in the funeral business began with her father Merlin A. Wieting. In 1953 Merlin began operating the Techman-Wieting funeral home in Hilbert Wisconsin, with his business partner Harvey Techman. In 1960 Merlin bought the Luecker Funeral Home in Brillion Wisconsin from Fred Luecker when he retired. In 1972, Marla’s brother Wayne “Bud” Wieting joined the family business and in 1974 Marla’s other brother Merlin Jr. “Fuzzy” Wieting joined the family business. In 1975 the Wieting’s purchased the Pfeffer Funeral home in Chilton and the Reedsville Co-op Funeral Home in Reedsville. Marla’s former spouse joined the family business in 1983. Choosing to leave the family business and branch out on their own they purchased the Curry Funeral Home in 1991. Marla graduated from Mortuary School with High Honors in 1995. Passing the Wisconsin State Funeral Directors Board exam and the National Funeral Directors Board exam, and completing a one year internship Marla became a Licensed Funeral Director in 1996. In 1997, Marla became the sole owner of the funeral home.
In 2001 Marla (Wieting) Schneider married Ronald Michaelis, a life time resident of the Jefferson, Johnson Creek and Lake Mills area, and the business became known as the Schneider-Michaelis Funeral Home LLC.
Marla and Ron maintain a close relationship with the family businesses her brothers and nephew own in Brillion, Reedsville, Chilton, and Kiel Wisconsin.
