Cremation

Often it is assumed that if cremation is to be used, then there can not be any viewing of the loved one.  There is no basis for this assumption.  Cremation does not change anything except the final disposition of the body of a loved one.  Any wish a family might have can be done in a cremation service just as it can in burials.  To prepare the body for viewing before cremation is no different than preparing the body before burial and both have the same therapeutic effect on the family.

Cremation Choices

  • Full traditional or contemporary service before your loved one has been cremated with the body present at the service
  • Memorial service before cremation with loved one not present.
  • Memorial service after cremation has taken place
  • Any combination of the above
  • Immediate cremation with no service/ceremony.

If the body is cremated ...

  • The remains can be kept by the family - and perhaps displayed - in an urn.
    • Urns and urn jewelry are options for a family to consider.
  • The remains can be placed in a niche within a columbarium.
  • The remains can be buried in the ground in a regular plot or in a smaller cremation plot.
  • The remains can be entombed in a crypt within a mausoleum.

Why people choose cremation;  Varies for each individuals or family's belief system

Here are some other reasons you might choose cremation:

1. Cremation is traditional in your family, religious group, or geographical area

 2. You want to keep the costs down

  • Selecting cremation does not mean, however, that you will have an inexpensive funeral.

Decisions You Must Make If You Choose Cremation

  • What type of cremation service/ceremony suits your family and traditions.
  • Whether to rent a casket for services or purchases a casket.
  • What to do with the remains following the cremation.

If you are distributing the remains....

Some jurisdictions have laws prohibiting the scattering of remains; others require a permit. Ask your funeral director.

The funeral director will prove to be a wonderful resource in this choice.  He or she knows the procedures and will help the family with this decision.
